About Claricare Cosmetics

Claricare Cosmetics is a Tanzanian start-up founded by Clara Mushi, a pharmacy student with a deep passion for skin health and a clear vision for what African skincare should look like. Born from a gap she witnessed firsthand — shelves flooded with imported products that were not formulated for African skin, African weather, or African wallets — Clara set out to create something different.

Claricare is not just another beauty brand. It is a science-led, plant-based skincare company built specifically for the African skin and climate. Every product is developed using pharmaceutical-grade botanical ingredients sourced from local Tanzanian farmers, and designed to work in harmony with the heat, humidity, and unique skin characteristics of East African consumers.

A Message from Our Founder

“Growing up and studying pharmacy in Kenya, I kept asking the same question: why is it so hard to find specialized and high-end skincare products that are safe, affordable, local, and made for us? The imported options dominating our market were either too expensive, potentially harmful, or simply not formulated for our skin and our climate. I started Claricare Cosmetics to change that — one product at a time. We are not just selling skincare. We are building something that belongs to Africa.”

Context

The Problem We Are Solving

Africa's cosmetics market has a significant and urgent problem. Between 70 and 80 percent of all cosmetics sold across the African continent are imported — brought in from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In East Africa alone, over 50 percent of cosmetic products are sourced from outside the region. This heavy import dependence has created a market full of products that were never designed with African consumers in mind.

These imported products often contain harsh preservatives and petroleum-based ingredients that trap body heat, clog pores, and worsen common skin conditions such as heat rash, fungal infections, eczema, and diaper dermatitis — all of which are far more prevalent in East Africa's hot, humid climate. On top of that, up to 40 percent of products in Arusha's local retail market are counterfeit, putting consumers at serious risk.

The result is a generation of African consumers who are paying too much, risking their skin health, and receiving too little in return. Claricare was created to change this reality.

Our answer

Our Solution — Plant-Based Skincare for African Skin

Claricare formulations are designed to gently protect and care for delicate skin, making them especially suitable for babies and everyday use. By creating a light, breathable moisture barrier, our products help reduce the risk of diaper rash, dryness, and irritation caused by heat, friction, and prolonged moisture. Instead of blocking the skin, they work in harmony with it — keeping it comfortable, hydrated, and well-protected throughout the day.

Unlike mass-market, petroleum-based products, Claricare's ingredients create a breathable moisture barrier that works with the skin — not against it. Our sourcing is local and intentional: shea butter from cooperatives in Kigoma, beeswax from Mbeya, and botanical extracts carefully selected for their proven therapeutic benefit. This is not simply “natural skincare.” This is pharmaceutical-grade skin science, designed and produced specifically for the African consumer.

To provide safe, affordable, and scientifically formulated plant-based skincare products designed specifically for African skin and climate — reducing reliance on harmful, imported cosmetics and making quality skin health accessible to every African family.

To become the leading herbal wellness brand in East Africa — a name African families trust completely for skincare that is locally made, clinically proven, and built around their real needs. We envision an Africa where locally formulated, pharmaceutical-grade skincare is the norm, not the exception.

Starting with Claricare Lip Balm and Baby Ointment, we plan to grow into adult skincare, therapeutic body creams, oral hygiene products, and holistic wellness supplements — all locally formulated, all made for African skin.

What we make

Our Products

Claricare currently offers two carefully developed products, each built on the same core botanical formulation base and adapted to meet specific skin care needs. Both products are made using shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax — a combination that delivers deep nourishment, a breathable protective barrier, and lasting hydration without clogging pores or trapping heat.

Claricare Lip Balm

The Claricare Lip Balm is our entry product and a daily essential. Already developed and tested at small scale, it has been warmly received by early users. It is designed to prevent and heal dry, cracked lips for users of all ages — from babies to adults. The formulation is free from synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals, delivered in eco-friendly bamboo tube packaging that reflects our commitment to the environment.

Who it is for: students, professionals, makeup artists, beauty salons, and anyone who wants simple, effective lip care made with ingredients they can trust. It is particularly popular in university communities and beauty circles across Arusha.

Claricare Baby Ointment

The Claricare Baby Ointment is our therapeutic skin solution for infants. It is a pharmaceutical-grade, oil-based formulation designed to protect, soothe, and restore infant skin — particularly in the diaper area where heat, moisture, and friction often cause painful rash and irritation. The ointment forms a breathable barrier that shields delicate skin without trapping heat or blocking natural perspiration, making it uniquely well-suited to the East African climate.

The active formulation combines shea butter or cocoa butter as the nourishing base, coconut oil for softness and antimicrobial protection, beeswax for structure and barrier strength, and pawpaw botanical extract for its natural healing properties. This makes Claricare Baby Ointment not just a protective cream, but a gentle therapeutic product that actively supports skin recovery and resilience in infants.

Who it is for: parents of diaper-age infants, maternity hospitals, paediatric clinics, pharmacies, and healthcare providers working with mothers and young children across Tanzania and East Africa.

Our Ingredients — From African Soil to Your Skin

Every ingredient we use is purposefully chosen for its therapeutic benefit, its suitability for African skin, and its local availability. We source directly from Tanzanian farming cooperatives, reducing import dependence while supporting local livelihoods.

Shea Butter — Kigoma, Tanzania

Rich in vitamins A and E, shea butter is the primary moisturizing base in our formulations. It deeply nourishes the skin, supports barrier repair, and has been used by African communities for generations. We source ours from cooperatives in the Kigoma region.

Beeswax — Mbeya, Tanzania

Beeswax gives our products structure, stability, and a strong yet breathable protective barrier. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and gentle on the most sensitive skin types, including newborns. Sourced from Mbeya.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil enhances the softness and spreadability of the product while providing natural antimicrobial and antifungal protection — especially important for preventing infant skin infections in diaper areas.

Cocoa Butter

Used interchangeably with shea butter based on seasonal availability, cocoa butter is equally nourishing and performs beautifully on African skin. It helps the skin retain moisture and elasticity.

Pawpaw Botanical Extract

A natural healing enzyme that accelerates skin repair, reduces redness and irritation, and enhances the therapeutic effectiveness of the baby ointment. Sourced as a concentrated botanical active.

People

Meet the Team

Claricare Cosmetics is currently a passionate two-person founding team combining pharmacy science, research expertise, and the entrepreneurial drive to bring this vision to life. We are lean by choice and strong by design.

Clara Mushi Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Clara is the heart and driving force of Claricare Cosmetics. A pharmacy student with hands-on experience in cosmetic formulation, she developed the concept for Claricare after attending innovation sessions at the USIU Innovation Centre, where she refined her skills in ideation and MVP development. Clara leads the overall business strategy, investor relations, product direction, and brand vision. She is the face of Claricare and the connection between science, community, and commerce.

Clara's background in pharmacy is what makes Claricare different. She does not approach skincare as a beauty trend — she approaches it as a clinical need. Every product formulation reflects her understanding of how ingredients interact with skin at a therapeutic level, and her commitment to making that science accessible and affordable for everyday African families.

Kennerdy Head of Research & Consultancy Management

Kennerdy brings research depth and scientific rigour to the Claricare team. Working in partnership with Clara, he leads the research and development process — overseeing formulation testing, ingredient validation, and the ongoing scientific consultancy that ensures every Claricare product meets pharmaceutical-grade standards. His role ensures that Claricare's claims are not just marketing language but are grounded in evidence and repeatable results.

Where we are going

Our 10-Year Vision

Claricare Cosmetics is not built for today alone. We have a long-term plan to grow from a two-product launch into a full-range herbal wellness brand that serves the entire East African region and beyond.

We began with two products — the Claricare Lip Balm and the Claricare Baby Ointment — chosen because they address the most immediate and widespread skin needs in our target market. These products form the foundation of a much larger vision.

Over the next ten years, our goal is to expand our product range to at least ten high-quality, locally manufactured skincare and wellness products. This expansion will move beyond skincare into therapeutic personal care, oral hygiene, and holistic supplements — all developed to the same pharmaceutical-grade standard that defines the Claricare brand.

By the end of our tenth year, we aim to achieve nationwide distribution across Tanzania and expand into at least three regional export markets across East Africa, including Kenya and Uganda. Our ambition is for 70 percent of customers who previously relied on imported herbal products to make the switch to Claricare — not because we asked them to, but because our products perform better, cost less, and were built for them.

We also aim to reduce the average cost of quality herbal skincare by at least 30 percent compared to the imported alternatives currently dominating the market — proving that science-led, locally made skincare can compete on every level, and win.

Six reasons to believe

Why Claricare Is Different

Science, nature, and heart — in every jar.

Built for the African climate

Our formulations are engineered specifically for heat, humidity, and the skin conditions most common in East Africa. Where imported petroleum-based products trap heat and worsen skin problems, Claricare's breathable botanical formulas work with the African climate, not against it.

Founded by a pharmacy professional

Claricare is not a cosmetics brand run by marketers. It is founded and led by Clara Mushi, whose pharmacy background ensures every product is developed to clinical standards, with real attention to ingredient safety, skin interaction, and therapeutic effectiveness.

Locally sourced, community-driven

Our ingredients are sourced directly from Tanzanian farmer cooperatives in Kigoma and Mbeya. Every product sold supports local agriculture, reduces carbon footprint, and keeps economic value within Tanzania.

Eco-friendly from the ground up

We use glass jars and bamboo lids — biodegradable, reusable, and free from single-use plastic. Our packaging reflects our values: a commitment to the African environment as much as the African consumer.

Pharmacy-distributed and clinically endorsed

We are building endorsement partnerships with paediatricians and midwives at regional referral hospitals across Tanzania. Our products are distributed through pharmacies and clinics, giving customers the confidence of professional recommendation alongside their purchase.

Affordable without compromise

Quality skincare should not be a luxury. Claricare's pricing is designed to be accessible to everyday African families — significantly below the market rate for comparable imported herbal products — without sacrificing the quality or safety that every customer deserves.

Our Partners & Distribution

Claricare is building a network of trusted partners to support every stage of the supply chain — from raw ingredients to your hands.

Ingredient sourcing. We source shea butter from farming cooperatives in Kigoma and beeswax from Mbeya, with verbal agreements already in place with two local farmer groups. This partnership supports rural livelihoods while giving us control over the quality and sustainability of our core ingredients.

Eco-friendly packaging. We partner with EcoPack Tanzania in Dar es Salaam and GreenPack Africa in Arusha for our glass jars and bamboo lids. Both suppliers specialise in sustainable packaging for local beauty brands and offer custom branding with minimum orders as low as 500 units.

Medical & clinical network. We are building clinical endorsement partnerships with paediatricians and midwives at Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital in Mwanza, Amana Regional Referral Hospital in Dar es Salaam, and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Arusha.

Logistics & delivery. For last-mile delivery across Dar es Salaam and Arusha, we partner with Golombolo and Bwabwa Logistics — both offering same-day and next-day delivery in urban and peri-urban areas. For expansion into Mwanza and Mbeya, we are in discussions with Zahara Logistics.
